Rías Baixas Designation of Origin: Winemaking Tradition and Excellence

The history of the Rías Baixas Designation of Origin is, in essence, the story of Bodegas Chaves. A family legacy that flourished thanks to the vision of José Chaves, son of Cándido, who in the 1980s saw unique potential in our Galician land. This dream began among the vineyards, where the Albariño grape, with its exceptional organoleptic properties, promised to revolutionize the world of wine.

José, at the helm of Bodegas Chaves, and along with seven other pioneering wineries, initiated a movement that changed the course of our viticulture. In those years, they traveled throughout Europe, sharing the richness of our land and the unique character of our wine, until they consolidated what we know today as the Rías Baixas Designation of Origin.

A Recognition Forged with Effort

The dream materialized in 1980, when the Albariño Specific Denomination was officially recognized in the Official State Gazette, October 11. Four years later, in 1984, the regulations that created the Regulatory Council were approved. And finally, in 1988, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food ratified the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin, marking a milestone in the history of Spanish wine.

The Jewels of Rías Baixas: Its Five Subzones

Each bottle of wine under the Rías Baixas DO is a reflection of its origin, a tribute to its five sub-zones:

  • Val do Salnés
  • Tea County
  • O Rosal
  • Soutomaior (incorporated in 1996)
  • Ribeira do Ulla (added in 2000)

In these lands there are more than 4,061 hectares of vineyards spread across 21,825 small plots, carefully tended by more than 5,550 winegrowers who continue to rely on traditional methods such as the emblematic trellising.
